Review – Tony Moly Mini Berry Lip Balm in Cherry and Blueberry

In general, I’m not much for cutesy packaging. Ruffles, bows, kitten pictures, and pastel colours don’t do a whole lot for me. That being said, I’m a huge sucker for things that are made to look like other things, and I have no words to describe why they make me so happy. They just do.

Ever since I found out that Tony Moly has a line of products that have fruit-shaped packaging, I’ve made it my mission to collect them. I have near-to-zero interest in their effectiveness as beauty products, I just want a collection of creams on my desk that looks like a fruit bowl. The thought of it gives me so much joy, I can’t even.

Cherry CosDNABlueberry CosDNA. Red 6 and butylene glycol score a 1 for comedogenicity. Not too concerned about that since these are going on your lips. Both of these contain a good number of parabens, so give them a miss if that bothers you.

User Experience

Tony Moly Mini Berry Cherry Lip Balm

The cherry lip balm comes in a lovely cherry shaped pot, complete with a little green rubber stem that is super fun to play with. The balm is thin with a milky coral color that can sink into lines and cracks if you have dry lips. The scent is reminiscent of cherry, but it also does have a very noticeable plasticky smell as well.

Tony Moly Mini Berry Blueberry Lip Balm

The blueberry lip balm comes in an equally cute blueberry shaped pot. The balm is a cool pink colour, and is more translucent and lacks the milky quality of the cherry balm, so it won’t sink into lines in dry lips. This one smells fruity as well, though with less of a waxy undertone than the cherry.

They both have fruity flavors laid overtop a strong waxy base. They are not delicious by any means, but they definitely are wearable.

Both of these balms are pretty thin, and as a result they do not wear very long. I tend to prefer balms that are much thicker because I need the staying power. I have chronically dry lips that I pick and peel to death, so a nice thick balm helps me not feel the dry skin edges, and provides a nice gloppy barrier that better prevents me from picking.

Tony Moly Mini Berry Swatches

The balms are pretty pigmented and deliver a good amount of colour. Surprisingly, I think I prefer the cherry to the blueberry on me despite my skin being cool-toned. The cool pink of the blueberry is somehow a bit too cool on me.

These do advertise an SPF of 15+, though due to their lack of staying power I do not recommend using them as your only lippy sun protection, if that’s something you are looking for.

Results

I wasn’t expecting a whole lot from these lips balms, and I was not surprised, pleasantly or otherwise. I do not find these balms to be  moisturizing, which I suspect is largely due to the thin formula. I find if I only use these balms, I have to frequently reapply to keep a nice slippy feeling on my lips. They provide a nice colour that does not stain, so again they have to be frequently reapplied if you want to maintain the tint.

Tony Moly Mini Berry Lip Balms

Not unless I wore out the packaging on one of them. I really only bought them for the pots they came in. The current plan is to use them up and then refill them with a much nicer lip balm that will actually perform. I’ve been eyeing a few balms from Epically Epic Soap, since they’ve had such great reviews. I’m hoping I can snag some blueberry/cherry flavor that I can then melt down into these old pots so I can reuse them.

Overall, I don’t recommend them if you need a good lip balm, but I definitely recommend them if you need to carry around a fruit shaped pot in your purse.
