I have a hard time with forcing myself to use body lotion. It’s easily my least favorite part of my routine because I find it really, really boring. I know it only takes a couple of minutes, but it feels like forever, and the lotiony feeling afterwards bothers me a lot more than it does on my face or my hands. So a body lotion has to do more than just moisturize in order for me to get excited about it. It needs to sink in quickly with as little dry-down time as possible, and it should smell amazing. It’ll be a painful chore to use up otherwise. Illi’s Total Aging Care Smoothing Lotion has been decent so far, and has probably come the closest to being a body lotion I maybe sort of enjoy using.

Pretty short ingredients list here, relatively speaking. It’s good to see some familiar favorites: camellia oil, ginseng and green tea, niacinamide, and adenosine. Something I haven’t ever seen before is natto gum. Natto is a Japanese food made from fermented soybeans and known for its gooey, stringy texture. Natto contains many skin benefits, and the most important component is Gamma Polyglutamic Acid. This amino acid is an incredible moisturizer, as well as being effective at reducing wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.
The lotion comes in a large plastic pump bottle, which is my preferred vehicle for most skincare products. The aesthetic is simple and rather minimalist. This product is scented, and I like it a heck of a lot better than the cream wash from the same line. It smells quite bright and citrusy with some typical hanbang earthiness to ground it, and it lingers just long enough to be enjoyable and not overwhelming.
Thankfully it does not have the sticky, viscous texture of natto! The texture is light and somewhat gel-like, and it spread extremely well. Seriously, a little goes a long, long way with this lotion. One pump is enough to cover both of my arms, or one of my legs. It takes about 4 pumps to cover my entire body. If you are only going to apply it to a small area, use it sparingly! It sinks in just fine as long as I don’t use too much, and the dry-down time is average. It’s better than other body lotions I’ve tried, but it does still leave a lotion-y feeling behind while it dries.
I was pleasantly surprised by this lotion in that it was more moisturizing than I expected it to be from it’s light texture. When I can work up the energy to rub myself down after my evening shower, I can feel the difference in my skin the next morning. I am noticeably softer, and my dry, itchy patches are soothed.
One time I was feeling especially extra and I slathered some Hada Labo lotion all over before applying the lotion I was testing at the time, and I couldn’t believe how soft I was the next day. I was low key petting my own shoulder for the entire morning. Illi’s Total Aging Care Smoothing Lotion doesn’t stretch all the way to that level of baby-softness, but it gets pretty close.
Would I Repurchase?
Maybe? This lotion has been the best I’ve tried so far, but I find it so hard to foster a liking for this product category. I actively resent the thought of having to moisturize my whole body. It’s so boring, and I have to stand there in the bathroom with no other external stimuli to entertain me. At least I can sit and watch Netflix/YouTube while I pat in my face products.
I have a feeling body lotion will always feel like a chore, and that’s a really steep hill for any product to overcome. Illi’s lotion is the least offensive and least chore-like I’ve found, so I could potentially see myself buying another at some point. (That won’t be for a long time though because I’ve got too many body products open at the moment, and they take forever to empty when you only open them up a couple times a month…)
